General Information
Mercedes-Benz 250 Additional Information
Newly available from our Brighton showroom is this exceptionally elegant 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250 SL ‘Pagoda’, finished in a beautiful period champagne/gold exterior over a contrasting black interior. Representing one of Mercedes-Benz’s most recognisable designs, the W113 SL has become an established icon of 1960s motoring. Designed under Paul Bracq and Béla Barényi, its distinctive concave removable hardtop gave rise to the now universally recognised ‘Pagoda’ nickname. This particular example is a highly desirable factory right-hand-drive automatic, confirmed by chassis number 113043 22 002259. The 113.043 designation identifies the car as a 250 SL, while the subsequent configuration digits identify right-hand drive and automatic transmission. With only 5,196 examples of the 250 SL produced worldwide, the model enjoyed a particularly short production run between the 230 SL and later 280 SL. Under the bonnet sits the 2.5-litre fuel-injected straight-six, paired here with Mercedes-Benz's four-speed automatic transmission. The combination suits the character of the Pagoda beautifully, providing the effortless, relaxed driving experience for which these cars remain so highly regarded. The exterior presents attractively in its period champagne/gold finish, complemented by the signature upright headlights, extensive brightwork, colour-coded wheel trims and the car's removable Pagoda hardtop. The photographs illustrate a car that retains the wonderfully delicate proportions and detailing that make the W113 instantly recognisable. Inside, the black upholstery, beautifully slender steering wheel, VDO instrumentation, centrally mounted analogue clock, chrome switchgear and extensive period detailing create an environment that could only have come from Mercedes-Benz's golden era. Particularly attractive is the timber trim running across the dashboard and through the centre storage console. The odometer displays 81,192 miles. Rather than presenting as an over-restored showpiece, the interior retains a pleasing degree of age and character consistent with a classic that has been enjoyed during its life. The car is also accompanied by its removable factory-style hardtop, transforming it from an elegant open two-seat roadster into the distinctive coupé profile from which the Pagoda earned its name. For collectors, the specification is especially appealing: 250 SL, 1967 production, factory right-hand drive and automatic transmission. While the later 280 SL is encountered more frequently, the short-lived 250 SL occupies an interesting position in W113 history, combining the earlier car's character with a larger and more flexible engine. A charming example of one of Mercedes-Benz's most enduring designs, now available to view by appointment at Strafford Cars, Brighton. -
